What is God's Will for You?

Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

What is God's will for my life?

We find ourselves asking this question often, don't we?

Whenever we need to make a big decision in our lives: which house do we buy, which job do we take, where do we move to...is this your will for me God?

When our mind is dizzying us, I think God is there standing in front of us, looking us in the eyes lovingly and saying,

"Child, deep breath. I love you. This is my will for you, where I have you right now."

If we were to look at God's will for our life as more of a way of walking than a decision we make, how would our perspective shift?

The world seems to have all the answers. When you go to the book store, the self help section seems to be filled with books on how to make your life better. When you ask someone for their opinion and they try to fix your situation (usually out of love). When you do make a decision but feel trapped in it and seek others opinions for options.

These are not bad things. God can and does use books, people, and wrong decisions to teach us. But let us look to the Giver and not just the gift.

The only book you need: The Bible.

The only person you need: Jesus.

I will be the first to admit that all too often I pick up the phone to call my best friend to discuss something before I pick up my Bible. From time to time you will see me wandering through the self help aisle. However, I think it is important we stop in that moment and ask ourselves: who am I putting my trust in right now?

God and His word are our foundation. Our family, our community, our knowledge, our possessions...these are all gifts and answers to the prayers we have been praying.

So, what is God's will for you?

To rejoice always.

To pray constantly.

To give thanks in everything.
